TITLE: The Virginia Dynasties: The Emergence of King Carter and the Golden Age
DESCRIPTION: Colonial Virginia, early exploration, Proprietary Lands of Lord Fairfax, Northern Neck of Virginia,George Washington, Patrick Henry, Thomas Jefferson, American Revolution 438 pages, illustrated, with bibliography and index. Traces the rise of the fortune-founders who make up the hard core of the ruling class–those men whose many-sided and outsize ambitions, pride and vanity, ruthlessness and personal honor and political responsibility, create this climate for greatness. These first plantation masters were no part of the myths of younger sons or the leisured planters of splendid dissipations. They came to, or were born in, Virginia on the mercantile tides of the era, and they were merchants and traders, shippers and storekeepers, as well as tobacco growers. While remote from the nobility, all the merchant-planters began with the advantages of some education, some money, and good connections. Studies include: Carter Family, Lee Family, Randolph Family, Byrd Family, Fitzhugh Family, Harrison Family, Ludwell Family as well as the English governors “with whom the rising powers dined and bargained and fought.” The central thread of this book is Robert King Carter (1663-1732) and draws from more than 200 unpublished letters, an unpublished diary, and personal material from Carter’s descendants.

FAQ: What is a “Family File” in the catalog?
Our Family Files contain various loose paper research materials donated to us by professional and amateur historians and researchers. They sometimes, but do not usually, also contain copies of pages from published books that would be found on our library shelves. Family Files are arranged by surname and may cover multiple lines and counties, mostly in eastern Virginia. They are of varying quality. Some include carefully researched data complete with citations to sources. Others are simply genealogical charts, family group sheets, handwritten notes, or other data which may or may not include references. Printed or scanned copies can be purchased. Contact us for specifics.
