ITEM DETAIL
CALL NUMBER:
OBJECT TYPE: Family File
TITLE: Ball, Mary, Mother of George Washington
DESCRIPTION: Wife of Augustine Washington and mother of George Washington. Daughter of Joseph Ball Sr. of “The Forest”, in Lancaster County and his second wife, the widow Mrs. Mary Johnson. Though now known as “Epping Forest”, this plantation was never called that during the life of Mary Ball Washington. It is not until the 1840s that the name of “Epping Forest” is first found in the deed records. The Mary Ball’s moniker of “The Rose of Epping Forest” is a purely romantic fiction. Her mother’s maiden name is not known. The researcher may often find it given as either Bennett or Montague, for which is there is no proof for either assertion. It has been fairly well established that it was not Montague, and the circumstantial evidence for it being Bennett is flimsy at best. This file contains all known articles about Mary Ball Washington and her ancestry.

FAQ: What is a “Family File” in the catalog?
Our Family Files contain various loose paper research materials donated to us by professional and amateur historians and researchers. They sometimes, but do not usually, also contain copies of pages from published books that would be found on our library shelves. Family Files are arranged by surname and may cover multiple lines and counties, mostly in eastern Virginia. They are of varying quality. Some include carefully researched data complete with citations to sources. Others are simply genealogical charts, family group sheets, handwritten notes, or other data which may or may not include references. Printed or scanned copies can be purchased. Contact us for specifics.
