OBJECT TYPE: Book
TITLE: Thomas Jefferson & the new nation
DESCRIPTION: Biography of Thomas Jefferson. The author identifies three dominant themes running through Jefferson’s career: democracy, nationality and enlightenment. From the fly leaf: “The book, based on a rare command of the entire body of Jefferson literature, but in the main upon Jefferson’s papers and correspondence, avoids stereotypes and oversimplifications, and explains Jefferson’s thought and action within the flow of experience and the public drama in which he was so prominent. Sally Hemings is mentioned on pages 355 (going to France) and 707 (suggests that the father of her children was the wayward Peter Carr–the book written prior to DNA testing.) Calls her “The African Venus.”

FAQ: What is a “Family File” in the catalog?
Our Family Files contain various loose paper research materials donated to us by professional and amateur historians and researchers. They sometimes, but do not usually, also contain copies of pages from published books that would be found on our library shelves. Family Files are arranged by surname and may cover multiple lines and counties, mostly in eastern Virginia. They are of varying quality. Some include carefully researched data complete with citations to sources. Others are simply genealogical charts, family group sheets, handwritten notes, or other data which may or may not include references. Printed or scanned copies can be purchased. Contact us for specifics.
