TITLE: Justice Has Something To Do With It: Class Relations and the Confederate Army
DESCRIPTION: A discussion of class distinctions within the white community in Virginia before and during the Civil War. Did middle-class and poor whites view the causes of the war differently than the elites? Did they support or oppose the Confederate government and its war aims? Did they openly work to subvert the government? What constituted class identity? To answer these questions, the author writes “[An] analysis of class relations offers the opportunity to explore these questions for perhaps the most important group of participants involved in the war, because without an effective army there could be no Confederate nation. In particular, this study will explore soldiers serving in Virginia units.” Virginia Magazine of History and Biography.

FAQ: What is a “Family File” in the catalog?
Our Family Files contain various loose paper research materials donated to us by professional and amateur historians and researchers. They sometimes, but do not usually, also contain copies of pages from published books that would be found on our library shelves. Family Files are arranged by surname and may cover multiple lines and counties, mostly in eastern Virginia. They are of varying quality. Some include carefully researched data complete with citations to sources. Others are simply genealogical charts, family group sheets, handwritten notes, or other data which may or may not include references. Printed or scanned copies can be purchased. Contact us for specifics.
