TITLE: The Jefferson-Hemings Controversy: Report of the Scholars Commission
DESCRIPTION: This report examines the evidence for the widely-held opinion that Thomas Jefferson was the father of slave Sally Hemings’ children. While there is no dispute that a Jefferson male was the father of her son Eston Jefferson, this commission concludes that Thomas Jefferson was probably not the father of Eston, or any of her other children. This is a view contrary to that held by the Thomas Jefferson Memorial Foundation, the owners of Monticello. Evidence is examined pro and con. The commission consisted of 13 scholars with professional experience and knowledge of the life of Thomas Jefferson. The controversy has not been resolved. Hard cover. 412 pages, with index. Gift of the John and Catherine Coolidge Lastavica Literary Fund of the Thomas Jefferson Heritage Society, March 2015.

FAQ: What is a “Family File” in the catalog?
Our Family Files contain various loose paper research materials donated to us by professional and amateur historians and researchers. They sometimes, but do not usually, also contain copies of pages from published books that would be found on our library shelves. Family Files are arranged by surname and may cover multiple lines and counties, mostly in eastern Virginia. They are of varying quality. Some include carefully researched data complete with citations to sources. Others are simply genealogical charts, family group sheets, handwritten notes, or other data which may or may not include references. Printed or scanned copies can be purchased. Contact us for specifics.
